THE PROMISE
WEDGE / PRIVATE BETA
“Consensus is a tax on imagination. Your task is to locate the secret nobody sees, protect it from evidence, and treat any disagreement as an indicator of unusually clean positioning.”
ADVANCE PRAISE / UNSOLICITED
“I disagreed with every page, which the author explains is the strongest available endorsement.”
The Journal of Deferred VerificationSpring list, unread
“Nobody at our firm has finished it. We are up an amount we have chosen not to specify.”
Wedge & HorizonQuarterly letter, footnoted
“Explains why my 2019 position remains correct and what the world still has to do about that.”
The Early QuarterlyReader submission, published
“I have been early to this book since before it was written.”
Bulletin of Unmet ConsensusBlurb solicited, then denied
“A rigorous account of what will turn out to have been obvious.”
Contrarian Studies AnnualPeer review pending, permanently
“The only volume on my shelf that cannot be wrong. It is also the only one I reread.”
The Lonely Alpha LetterCirculation: himself
EXHIBIT A / BELIEF LEDGER
Make every outcome feel like a delayed confirmation.
The ledger is built so that no entry can ever be closed. Three events are handled below. A fourth event—the thesis fails outright—is handled by the horizon, and is treated in Appendix A.
“The thesis is properly non-consensus.”
“The category has not been metabolized yet.”
“As stated. In 2021. Roughly.”
A claim that cannot lose cannot teach you anything. It can only accumulate.
— OPENING REMARKS, THE EARLY SUMMIT, ATTENDANCE 14
POSITIONING FRAMEWORK / NC-1
Conviction is the asset. Evidence is the liability that arrives with it.
Plot yourself. Most operators over-index on evidence,1 which is the one input capable of arriving with bad news. The field has consistently found a 3.4× lift in perceived earliness for practitioners who move rightward and stay there.2
The Well-Read Bystander
Has read the study, the churn report, and the support tickets. Will not say what any of it means until Thursday. Enormous input, no aura.
The Merely Correct
Believes something and can show why. Structurally underpriced, because a position anybody can check is a position somebody will eventually grade.
The Open Question
Says “I don’t know yet, here’s how I’d find out.” Pre-thesis. Currently unmonetizable, though pleasant to work with.
The Wedge
Total conviction, no exposure. Nothing here can be checked, so nothing here can be lost. This is the quadrant the edition is written from.
SPECIMEN B / DECK PAGE
One slide, engineered so that no question can attach to it.
Reproduced with permission from a fund that has since raised a larger fund.3 Practitioners report that this is the most screenshotted page in the deck.4
WHAT HAPPENED: Nothing on the slide could turn out to be false, so nobody in the room had anything to ask. Two people wrote “high conviction” in their notes. The associate who asked what the category was got the answer “that’s the wedge” and stopped asking.
- Permission was granted by the person who made the slide, who is also the person who described it as the most rigorous page in the deck. ↩
- It is also the only page with no numbers on it. ↩
Loneliness used to be the price of seeing it first. We have found a way to sell it as the product.

INSTRUMENT NC-4
Score your own non-consensus positioning.
SELF-AUDIT / 6 ITEMS
Where does your thesis sit?
Answer honestly. There is no failing band. The instrument was validated on people who had already scored.
You have held the same thesis for eighteen months without revising a clause of it.
+3You can name three people who disagree with you and zero facts that would.
+4Something you predicted happened, and you did not check whether it happened for the reason you gave.
+3Your stated horizon has moved forward at least once, quietly, in a document nobody diffed.
+2You have described an empty room as an uncrowded space.
+3Somebody asked what would change your mind and you answered with a time frame.
+4
Emerging. You are still checking things, which reads as diligence and prices as doubt. Consider committing before the information arrives.
Load-bearing. You now hold a position the room cannot grade. Expect invitations, and expect them to be to the panel rather than the review.
Sealed. Nothing arriving from outside can reach the thesis. Colleagues have stopped bringing you results, which the field reads as deference. Do not open the folder marked 2023.
FIELD EXERCISE
Three ways to keep a thesis from meeting a Tuesday.
Make it outlast the room.
Choose a date that arrives after this fund, this role, and this group chat. Ordinary disagreement then converts cleanly into other people’s limited imagination.
Price isolation as scarcity.
If nobody engages, report the absence as headroom: the space is uncrowded, the category is early, the signal is operating a layer above the current vocabulary.
Never write down a test.
A hypothesis with a pass/fail condition is merely a fragile opinion wearing a spreadsheet. Keep the claim in speech, where it can be remembered generously.
BACK MATTER
Appendices.
APPENDIX A The horizon extension schedule, revised
The horizon is not a prediction. It is an instrument, and like any instrument it requires periodic recalibration against the room it is being read in.
- Q2 2022 — “inside eighteen months.”
- Q4 2022 — “inside eighteen months, from a cleaner starting point.”
- Q3 2023 — “the back half of the decade.”
- Q1 2024 — “before the end of the cycle, structurally.”
- Q2 2025 — “the thesis was never really about dates.”
Note that at no point was the thesis revised. Only its arrival. Practitioners who find this distinction uncomfortable are advised that discomfort is a lagging indicator of position size.
APPENDIX B A taxonomy of being alone, with pricing notes
Not all solitude carries the same premium. The field distinguishes four grades.
- Grade I. Alone because you looked and the others have not yet. Costly, verifiable, rare. Tends to end quickly, because the others eventually look.
- Grade II. Alone because you have not explained it yet. Temporary, and curable by one sentence you are choosing not to say.
- Grade III. Alone because the idea does not survive being explained. This is the grade the wedge is built on. It renews annually and requires no maintenance.
- Grade IV. Alone because you have been unpleasant in meetings. Regularly confused with Grade I. The field has not developed an instrument capable of separating them, and has not commissioned one.
APPENDIX C Approved responses to “what would change your mind?”
The question is rarely hostile, which is what makes it dangerous. Deliver any of the following warmly and at a slightly slower pace than the question was asked.
- “A result, obviously.” Do not specify which result. The word “obviously” performs the specificity for you.
- “Time.” True of every claim ever made, and impossible to put in a calendar.
- “If the category never forms.” The category has not been defined, and therefore cannot fail to form.
- “I update constantly.” Deliver this while not updating. Delivery is the whole of the technique.
None of these four answers is a lie. That is the function of the appendix.
ERRATA / THIRD PRINTING
- p. 9. The statement that the thesis was formed in 2019 should read 2022. The thesis is unchanged; only the head start has been corrected.
- p. 41. “Nobody else saw it” should read “nobody else was asked.”
- p. 88. The chart on this page had no vertical axis. One has been added for the third printing. The line is unchanged.
- p. 140. The phrase “we were early” appears eleven times. Nine of those refer to the same Tuesday.
- p. 203. The index lists “evidence” with a page reference. The reference is to this errata.
Real disagreement comes with a way to settle it: what you expect, roughly when, and what result would count as you being wrong. Without those three things, a position is not independent thinking—it is a claim that has been made permanently safe.
HUMAN TRANSLATION
If you think the room is wrong, say what you expect to happen and by when. Write down the result that would make you drop the view, then actually go and look on that date. Being alone in a position is sometimes the cost of being right early, but it is never the evidence for it. The people who are genuinely early keep a record; the people who are performing it keep an audience.
