ARTIFACT PRESS / COMPANION FIELD EDITIONS

A library for the person who needs a doctrine before the reply-all.

Seven fictional satirical editions on the habits that turn a reasonable question into a founder mythology, a meeting ritual, an agent council, or a season of personal content.

NO FAKE REVIEWS · NO REAL AUTHORS · NO ACTUAL ADVICEHUMAN TRANSLATION INSIDE
EDITION NOTE These are fictional satirical field editions. They critique postures—borrowed certainty, transactional language, and pseudo-rigor—not ambitious people, AI users, professional writers, or any real individual.

THE IMPRINT

Small books for very large explanations.

Artifact Press lives one shelf over from the main manual. Each edition isolates a familiar maneuver: mistaking constraints for enemies, treating dissent as a branding opportunity, building a control room around a two-minute task, or asking one model to play five executives.

The prose is intentionally over-inflated. The exit ramp is not. Every guide ends by naming the ordinary, useful behavior the performance has been avoiding.

The catalog below is finished and available. The forthcoming list is longer, and always will be — a title enters it the moment it has a code, and the only titles that have ever left it went straight to the withdrawal shelf.

MASTHEAD / EDITORIAL BOARD

Eight titles, no names, one shared voice.

ACQUISITIONS EDITOR, ADJACENT CERTAINTY

Reads the first paragraph of a proposal and the author’s posting cadence, in that order. Has never declined a manuscript — only rescheduled one.

HEAD OF UNFALSIFIABLE CLAIMS

Reviews each thesis for the one result that would disprove it, and removes that result. Reports a clean pass rate since founding.

DIRECTOR OF FRONT MATTER

Owns the catalog code, the printing number, the format, and the extent. Owns nothing between page one and the appendices.

SENIOR COPY EDITOR, TENSE AND CONVICTION

Converts hedges to present-tense declaratives at proof stage. “We suspect” leaves as “we know,” at no additional cost to the author.

COMMISSIONING EDITOR, LATE-NIGHT HUNCHES

Receives the 11:40 p.m. message that opens “this might actually be a book.” It has been a book every time.

HEAD OF EXTENT

Guarantees no edition ships under 180 pages. Maintains a folder of appendices general enough to attach to anything.

ARCHIVIST, WITHDRAWN TITLES

Keeps the out-of-print shelf accurate and dated. Is the only member of the board who knows, in each case, what happened.

READER IN RESIDENCE

Reads the editions end to end before publication and raises objections in writing. Post vacant since the second printing.

212 PAGES, MEDIAN EXTENT Nine of them load-bearing. The remainder is apparatus, and the apparatus is the product.
40 TITLES IN PRINT Seven have been written. The other thirty-three have a cover, a code, and a quarter.
0 THESES REVISED POST-PUBLICATION Errata are issued generously. The argument underneath has never required one.
6 TITLES WITHDRAWN Each pulled after contact with a result. We publish the figure, which we consider a form of rigor.

SHELF 01 / AURA MISREADS

When a cultural shorthand becomes a whole operating philosophy.

First principles and contrarianism are useful tools. The joke begins when their cadence replaces the work.

EDITION 01CONSTRAINTS

The Constraint Transcendence Protocol

A first-principles guide to treating every limit — budget, physics, the vendor’s six weeks — as a personal challenge to reality.

Open field edition
EDITION 02CONTRARIANISM

The Non-Consensus Wedge

How to be early, alone, and conveniently insulated from a result for the entire length of the bet.

Open field edition

SHELF 02 / OPERATIONAL THEATRE

Install a system, then locate the problem it was supposed to solve.

Management language is useful until it provides a more comfortable place to stand than the work itself.

EDITION 03ALIGNMENT

The Ninety-Second Alignment Loop

Convert human friction into a repeatable ritual before anyone in the room has finished speaking.

Open field edition
EDITION 04AGENTS

The Executive Agent Council

Five roles, one model, and a posture that has been pressure-tested against itself all afternoon.

Open field edition
EDITION 05METRICS

The Directional Data Doctrine

How to make a hunch board-ready without ever letting it change your mind about the hunch.

Open field edition

SHELF 03 / BROADCAST DOCTRINE

Turn hesitation into public strategy.

There is nothing wrong with sharing what you learned. There is something funny about extracting twelve lessons from an elevator delay.

EDITION 06BROADCAST

The Ambient Leadership Post

Turn a minor encounter — a barista, a delayed train, a junior colleague — into a large lesson before breakfast.

Open field edition
EDITION 07OPTIONALITY

The Option Surface Playbook

Preserve every available future until the present decision quietly expires on its own.

Open field edition

SHELF 04 / FORTHCOMING

Announced, catalogued, and structurally unwritten.

A title joins this list the moment it has a code. Nothing has ever left it by being finished.

The Pre-Consensus Position

Being early and alone, extended from a posture into a complete career architecture.

Still Directional

A full-length defense of the directional metric, composed without reference to any metric.

Q3, if the number holds
AP–046–TUE

The Unfalsifiable Edition

Every claim compatible with every outcome. Nothing in it can be wrong, and for the same reason nothing in it can be finished.

In its fourth printing

SHELF 05 / OUT OF PRINT & WITHDRAWN

Six titles that met a result.

We publish our withdrawals. No comparable imprint does, which we regard as the strongest evidence of rigor available to us.

What the coming decade would obviously require of every operating model, stated in advance and without conditions.

The operator’s complete methodology, applied to a kitchen, a calendar, and one long Sunday conversation.

Withdrawn at the request of the second author
AP–033–TMH

The Metric Holds

An entire doctrine resting on a single quarterly indicator, carried with total and public confidence.

Recalled; the metric moved

What the trade press has said about our willingness to keep going.

Solicited in every case, then described as unsolicited in the front matter.

The Journal of Load-Bearing ProseReview copy, spine uncracked

“Every edition ends by telling you plainly what to do instead. We have chosen not to dwell on that part.”

Signal Density ReviewFeatured, briefly

“A house style so consistent that authorship has become a formality.”

COLOPHON

About the making of this shelf.

Set in Inter for the sentences that want to sound operational and in a transitional old-style serif for the sentences that want to sound inevitable. Printed nowhere. Bound in HTML, at a page count nobody has counted. The catalog codes are decorative and the printings are invented. The numbering starts at 002 because a list that starts at 001 invites the question of how many there are.

No real person, company, or publication appears anywhere in this catalog. Every journal quoted above was invented for the purpose of quoting it, and every member of the board is a job title with nobody inside it.

Artifact Press is an artifact of the thing it satirizes. It was assembled quickly, in a confident voice, with a great deal more apparatus than argument — which is the joke, and also the hazard. A page that mocks over-production by over-producing is one careless sentence away from belonging on the shelf beside it.

The target is a posture, not a person. Ambition, curiosity, enthusiasm for a new tool, and the nerve to say something before it is fully formed are not the subject. The subject is the moment those turn into a costume that keeps a real question at a comfortable distance. That moment is available to anyone, on a bad Tuesday, and the exit from it is small: lower the altitude, name what you do not know, and let the other person’s observation stay real. In every edition on this shelf, the colleague who says the onboarding flow is confusing is right.
